There are lots of terrific reasons to love Twitter. Twitter is terrific for connecting with amazing people who do amazing things and share fantastic content. It’s especially terrific in that it can strengthen a personal brand and grow an inbound lead pipeline. But it starts with a terrific Twitter profile.

Treat Twitter Right

Like all great relationships, you must invest time and effort into Twitter to get the most out of Twitter. A half-hearted Twitter profile and an occasional tweet will not build your brand on Twitter or grow your business.

Make Your Twitter Profile Shine

It’s a fact: It matters what your Twitter profile looks like. Twitter moves fast. If your Twitter profile doesn’t stand out, you’ll blend into the background. Be your authentic self.

Oreo has a creative Twitter profile.

Set Up a Terrific Twitter Profile with Thoughtful Choices

  1. Choose a common thread

Before you set up your Twitter profile, think through the design, and ask yourself, “What do I want my profile to say about me?” Then, choose a common thread to run through all of the elements of your profile – bio, header image, photo, pinned Tweets.

All of this speaks volumes about your brand, what you stand for and who you really are. should reflect your brand identity and personality. It should position your best content in a compelling way. Make sure your branding is consistent across all of your social networks.

  1. Choose your Twitter username

Incorporate your brand name. Resist choosing something funky, crafty, or difficult to remember. Use your name or something that represents your brand’s name instead. Straightforward usernames make it easy for people to find you.

Add your handle, your Twitter username, to your website, marketing content, email signature, and social media platforms to begin building your followers.

Schedule

  1. Choose your Twitter profile photo

Choose a profile photo that visually represents your brand. The most recent change to the Twitter layout recommends 400×400 pixels for a profile photo. The image is automatically resized to fit. Don’t use a blurry, low-resolution photo.

As a business owner, you’re not just choosing a picture. You’re choosing the face of your business on Twitter.

  1. Choose your header photo

Don’t skimp on your header by choosing a boring stock image. Your header adds a refined touch to your profile. Showcase the awesomeness of your brand in your header.

The most recent recommended size for Twitter headers is 1500 x 500 pixels. Again, your image is automatically resized to fit, and it is cropped to a 2:1 aspect ratio on mobile devices.

  1. Choose your 160-Characters for your Profile Bio

Your bio is displayed on your Twitter profile header, below your name and username.

This is no place for a thesis. Tell the world who are you and what you do. Concisely describe your brand, products or services with 160 characters. Include a trackable link to drive traffic to your website or landing page.
