Do you struggle with writing blog posts? Maybe you just want to improve your writing skills and/or write faster, better, consistently. It’s possible, but it takes effort. It takes commitment to form a good writing habit. But with commitment, planning, and then some good ol’ fashioned hard work, you can form the best writing habit and experience rewards thanks to consistent blogging.
How to Form the Writing Habit
Make Writing a Priority
There are 24 hours in a day. No one gets more or less than 24 hours every day. And no one can do everything either. But what we actually accomplish are those tasks we make a priority, those to-do’s we put at the top of our to-do lists.
Block Off Three Hours a Day
Block off three hours a day for writing, every day. Which three hours should you block off? We’re all different, so there’s not a three-hour block of time that will accommodate every person perfectly. But much like exercising, if you don’t get it done before the rest of the world starts doing their thing at 8:00AM, it won’t get done.
Some bloggers recommend writing from 5:30AM to 8:30AM. I exercise and get ready for the day first, and write from 8:30AM to 11:30AM, Monday through Friday.
Just Write
Do NOT allow anything to distract you from writing.
- Don’t look at email
- Turn off your notifications
- Leave your phone in another room
- Don’t take a break to eat breakfast or get something to drink
- Schedule client calls after 11:30AM
Just write.
Don’t Give Up
If you’ve heard that writing a certain number of words every day makes you a better writer or writing one blog post a day makes you a better blogger, hit the delete button. The important thing is to just keep at it, doing what YOU CAN do. Life happens. So flex and get after forming your writing habit repeatedly.
Plan Ahead to Form a Writing Habit
In all practicality, you can’t just decide to write when your alarm goes off at 5:30AM. You must plan ahead. Here’s an example of how I plan ahead:
- Block off 8:30AM to 11:30AM on your Google calendar Monday through Friday of every week
- Lay clothes out for tomorrow
- Get ready for bed
- Set alarm for 5:30AM
- Hit the hay between 9:00PM and 9:30PM
Then I’m rested and prepared to eat breakfast, exercise, get ready for the day, and start writing without distractions from 8:30AM to 11:30AM!
